Special Education Practice in Virginia
Richmond, VA -
August 22, 2002

The Virginia Legal Advocacy Center will offer its special education CLE, Special Education Practice in Virginia, in Richmond on August 22, 2002.

This CLE will be held in the Markel/Essex Building, 4521 Highwoods Parkway, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060. (Directions and Map)

The program carries a total of 7 CLE credits, including 2 ethics credits, and 3 Guardian ad litem credits. The training is geared toward attorneys, advocates, and parents considering or involved in due process.

Competencies to be achieved:

  • Develop an understanding of which laws and regulations impact the education of students with disabilities, which students qualify for services, and how a student’s right to a free appropriate public education is further defined by court cases.
  • Develop an understanding of the scope and breath of special education and related services available to students declared eligible to receive such services.
  • Develop an understanding of the special provisions for school discipline involving a student with disabilities and protections for students qualifying, but not yet declared eligible for special education.
  • Develop an understanding of various processes for resolving disputes concerning special education issues.
  • Develop an understanding of what is involved in handling your first due process; both the ethical considerations and practical pitfalls.

Participants will receive Wrightslaw: Special Education Law with their conference materials.

Meals: Continental Breakfast and Lunch are included with the program.

Map of Western Richmond & Market Essex BldgFrom Richmond: Take I-64 West to Exit 178B (U.S.Route 250 East towards Richmond). Merge onto West Broad Street. Go to the second traffic light and turn left onto Cox Road. Follow Cox Road to the third traffic light and turn left onto Sadler Place. Make the first left onto Highwoods Parkway. Turn left into parking lot at Markel/Essex Marquis.

From Norfolk: Take I-64 West to I-295 North. Follow I-295 to Exit 51B (Nuckols Road South). At the first traffic light, turn right onto Sadler Road. Turn left onto Sadler Place. Make the first right onto Highwoods Parkway. Turn left into parking lot at Markel/Essex marquis.

From Charlottesville
: Take I-64 East to I-295 South. Take Exit 51B (Nuckols Road South). At the first traffic light, turn right onto Sadler Road. Turn left onto Sadler Place. Make the first right onto Highwoods Parkway. Turn left into parking lot at Markel/Essex marquis.

From Northern Virginia: Take I-95 South to I-295 North and follow the directions as if coming from Norfolk.
