Bunny: I live in New york. My son has IEP with specialized transportation on it. My question is can I request he get transportation home from an after school activity? He has never been able to participate after school because I cannot pick him up. He has social emotional issues, anxiety and would love for him to be integrate more. Does the NYC DOE have to give him transportation home? They are saying no.
Without knowing all of the details I would say that your district is correct in determining they are not required to provide transportation on the IEP so your son can attend after-school activities. Students qualify for transportation when it is a disability-related issue…not because I parent doesn’t have a way to transport the student home.
