Carmen: My son has numerous disabilities. He is non-verbal. He has a nurse that attends school with him. The nurse has been with my son for 2 1/2 years. My son’s nurse reports that my son plays with DVD or IPad for hours a day. The school states he spends a total of 30 minutes a day. My son’s behavior when he comes home from school indicates he has spent hours a day. When my son is over stimulated from such activities he looks “stoned”. I am tired of the school lying to me about how my son is educated. So much more to this story and I do have an advocate but she was unsure of the answer. We live Virginia and are a one-consent state. This issue has been occurring for the last 3 years. Typically, I do not send my son to summer school and detox him from electronics. I do not have the energy to continue this. Please help!
It sounds to me like you needed an IEP meeting like yesterday. I would request an IEP meeting ASAP. Before the actual meeting you can write to the school (paper trail) to receive your child’s file. All the data, test scores, evaluation, teacher notes should be in this file. Review this and this should give you some idea as to how your child is progressing. As Chuck said goals may need to be changed or new ones need to be added.
Your state parent training & information project can assist you. http://www.parentcenterhub.org/find-your-center The school should be addressing his IEP goals. He should be making progress on his goals. That is the place to begin, but goals may need to be changed or added to.
