Sam: Here are the OCR Guidelines that Morning mentioned. http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/letters/colleague-201301-504.pdf
They attempt to clarify discriminatory practices for extracurricular activities and athletics to ensure students with disabilities consistently have the opportunity to participate. But Morning gives good advice about addressing any academic deficits or needs to ensure progress – a win across the board.
Hi, I am a mother of a high school varsity athlete with a LD. My first concern centers around academic progress. I love the sports, but sports are secondary to meeting IEP goals and for my child, preparing for college. Address the low GPA with the PPT team, your son and his needs, The school may need to closely look at his academic deficits and address them or have an IEE. Sports may also be key to keeping him motivated. Some states are waiving the GPA requirements for sports. There are also federal guidelines with access to sports for kids with disabilities. Don’t give up but address the low GPA first through the PPT team to ensure that he is making progress.
