Classification: CHANGING SCHOOL CLASSIFICATION

Share

Dorothy:  My child, age 9, is severely mentally handicapped. He will be a baby forever..6 mos. To a year old has been his limit. The school classifies him as deaf/blind, which he also qualifies for. I feel he is unable to be educated. What would happen if I chose to change his classification to reflect that?

  1. I believe that anyone can learn even if very little and very slowly. I would continue to get as much for him as possible. Perhaps he just needs the right kind of schooling.

  2. Federal rules require schools to address all of a student’s needs regardless of the disability classification. So a change of classification should not change anything. Your state may have a classification of multiple disabilities.
