Shellia: Does my child have to be on medication to meet the guidelines for a child with a mental disability? He is odd , add and bipolar 1. I was told unless he’s medicated he doesn’t meet guidelines for kids with disabilities even though he is in a special class, has a medical diagnose since age 3 and has an iep.
Shellia, can you clarify what the dispute you and the school are having, specifically?

I have never heard of anything like this. I had 3 sons on IEP’s. Two were on medication & one was not. The school still provided services & made no statement about medication playing into it at all.
No. IDEA specifically says that schools cannot require students to be on medications. Your state parent training & information center can assist you. http://www.parentcenterhub.org/find-your-center/
